Recent Red Elephant golf standout Spencer Ralston (GHS ’16) earned a spot in the 2016 United States Amateur today at the United States Golf Association (USGA) qualifier at Newnan Country Club. Spencer shot a 36-hole total two-under par score to secure a spot in a two-man playoff for the fourth and final qualifying spot. Spencer defeated Georgia State’s JJ Grey with a birdie on the first playoff hole. Spencer will be entering the University of Georgia as a member of their golf team in August 2016.
One of the most prestigious amateur golf events in the world, the US Amateur will be held August 15-21 at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Township, Michigan.
Spencer becomes the second former Red Elephant to punch his ticket to the US Amateur in recent weeks. Former teammate and current Western Carolina golfer Jackson Bishop earned a spot in the field on July 20.
The last GHS golfer to make the US Amateur before Jackson and Spencer was Stuart Moore (GHS ’01) in 2004 at Oakmont Country Club in Philadelphia while a member of Auburn’s golf team.
