Gainesville with a needed to win game tonight did just that. Going on the road to Apalachee, Gainesville got its running game working again tonight. Taking the opening kick-off Gainesville with a 71 yard drive with KD Smith running the ball well. Gainesville scored on a pass from Irons to Davis for 13 yards to go up 7-0 with 9:00 on the clock. Gainesville scored again on a 55 yard punt return by Calvin Murphy with 4:11 in the first to go up 14-0. The first quarter ended that way 14-0. Gainesville had a 56 yard drive capped by a Irons 23 yard run with 8:02 in the second to lead Apalachee 21-0. Irons again scored on a 1 yard run with 3:12 left in the second to lead 28-0. The first half ended with Gainesville up 28-0.
Apalachee took the second half kick-off but was stopped again by a stout Gainesville defense. Gainesville’s quarterback Demarcus Irons was ejected in the third with under 5 minutes left. Jim Barnett was again pressed into QB duties to finish the game. The third quarter ended with the 28-0 score. The fourth quarter was a defensive battle. Barnett did a good job taking over for Irons who will sit next week. Gainesville will take a 28-0 victory tonight. Gainesville had 278 total yards with 173 on the ground an 105 in the air. Big Red will travel to Lanier next Friday. Lanier was beat by Dacula tonight to take the region championship. That sets up a second place game next week between Big Red and Lanier. The second place team may host a playoff game. Gainesville is now 5-4 on the year and 3-1 in Region 8 6A.
