Gainesville wide receiver Walt Dixon caught 11 passes for 276 yards and four touchdowns in September, good for a 25-yard-per-catch average in the month. Dixon, a senior for the football team, set the tone for September of the first Friday of September, catching four passes for 157 yards – 39 yards per catch – and two touchdowns to help Big Red to a 55-7 win against Lambert.
The Volleyphants Camille Calkins helped her team to a 13-3 record and the Hall County Championship in September leading the way in service percentage (97.5) and hitting (.260).
Gainesville cross country runner Donangelo Marshall is, according to his coach Richard Corbett, “a team leader in the classroom and on the course, leading the boys XC team to a No. 5 ranking for 6A boys teams so far this season.” Marshall has a season-best time of 16:58 recorded in a second-place finish for Gainesville against 31 other teams at the Wingfoot Invitational in Cartersville.
Big Red softball senior Emma Phillips had a .391 batting average and .481 on-base percentage for the month of September to lead the way for Gainesville. Phillips, a catcher, also managed just one error in the field for the month while boasting a .967 fielding percentage.
Finally, McKenna Shaw, in her second year as a varsity competition cheerleader, has, according to coach Brett Dillin, “really progressed this season, becoming a strong backspot for elite level stunts and being a tumbler in the routine. Even as a sophomore she is a leading voice on this team!”
