We want your vote for the Big Red October athlete of the month. Read about the accomplishments of the four nominees in the month of October, and then submit your vote in the poll below. The winner will be revealed Monday, and subsequently featured on the Gainesville Red Elephant athletics website.
Sophomore Alexandra Ramirez is in her second year as a varsity competition cheerleader for GHS, and first year as a varsity spirit cheerleader. For the competition team, Ramirez is the flyer for the Red Elephants’ main stunt sequence, performing full-up extension to stretches, quick toss power press to full down, and in the team’s running and tumbling sections. According to coach Brett Dillin, “Alexandra has worked hard this season to improve these skills and stepped outside of her comfort zone to reach these goals for her team.”
Red Elephants’ quarterback Gionni Williams had a banner October in leading Gainesville to a 2-1 region record with wins against Habersham Central and Winder-Barrow. For the month, the junior signal caller tallied 380 yards passing with one touchdown and 270 yards rushing with three scores. Against Winder-Barrow on Oct. 25, Williams had his best outing of the month, amassing 114 yards passing with a touchdown while he rushed for 155 yards and two TDs.
Gainesville senior volleyball player Isabella Appling was nominated by her coach Randy Roys. Appling, a team captain for the 2019 season, finished the year with 57 aces, 122 kills, and 441 digs as the Volleyphants went 37-9 en route to a Hall County Championship, second-place finish in the Area 8-AAAAAA Tournament, and state-playoff berth.
Gainesville cross country nominees Ashley Thompson and Ashley Sosa proved themselves a formidable duo throughout the 2019 cross country season, culminating with first- and second-place finishes respectively in the Region 8-AAAAAA Championships. Thompson and Sosa, nominated by their coach Richard Corbett, finished first and second respectively in six of the team’s nine 2019 races.
